and I knew the kindest thing I could do for the darling, so left word
for the doctor. But I cried so when I got home that my eyes hurt
fearfully this afternoon and evening - coughed again.

A blue day. Mother went to prayer- meeting tonight. I
could read some.
Apr. 25 Thurs.
Not much better. J.W. is examining the bank. Gilmore is back from
Virginia and reports a fine time (but poor weather.)
Apr. 26. Fri.
Some better today (Eyes better
too. Lunched with GCB (it rained) & went to Nan's but she was sick (an operation) so went to the
Bijou. It has rained every day lately. Tonight
about 9:30 we had a good deal of excitement with a fire
over in the Bride's flat. Quite a severe one. The companies didn't
leave till eleven or so and the Murrays didn't
get home till after that. The Boyces
were away
& Swinburne had gone to bed-so had Papa and Zozie
was scared at the Engines & went & got on his bed,
Mother & I were on
Caring's piazza awhile & I was down talking to
"Glendale" - the
Ford St. hose cart driver who drove the city hospital
ambulance at the time of the
Orphan Asylum fire. Later we went
her - but
