nice hot bath and went to bed & to sleep - a nice breeze coming in the window. Sept. 1. Sat. Woke up betimes & got up early - a lovely morning. Packed up and found I could get breakfast a little before 7. Took a walk down thro' Madison Square

The Flatiron

newspapers, sleepers, &c. looked familiar enough - Walked 'way down to Union Sq - around the block & up Fifth ave. Everything had an "end - of - the - summer" as well as an early morning look, and I didn't crave to stay. Got a good breakfast & took my grip & went to DesBrosses St via. the ferry cars & the 9th Ave. L. Found a good place on the upper deck of the "New York" & none to early, as the decks were almost crowded later. It was very breezy "out- side" but fine clear brilliant air and bracing - and I was warm enough & had comfortable chair &c. so staid there till nearly to Poughkeepsie. The lower river was very interesting, as always, the banks were too - We made two stops - 42nd & 49th St. Saw the Riverside Drive, the Heights - the Palisades &c. &c. I had my maps & enjoyed it all intensely - especially the beautiful
