South Waterford - not very far up - but it was lovely! gathered a big bunch of goldenrod for the fireplace. Late Alice, Nan & I went out on the lake, and to Parker's, where we sat awhile on the piazza. They have a fine Boston terrier who is blind from a cat scratch, poor fellow. The house is delightful. The view lovely &c. The big living room is very attractive, too. After we left, we came across Miss Lawrence & her mother in their canoe (reading "The Virginian" &c.) and had a little chat before we left for home. We had company to supper Mr. Brewer (the organist of a Brooklyn in church) & his wife and Prof. Maxcy (teacher of English at William's college) and Mrs. Maxcy (a Troy girl.) Had a very pleasant, jolly time Everybody seemed to enjoy it. Mr. B made milk for us & Gurdon helped hand around Nan's famous salad &c. and then dis- appeared. Mrs. Brewer told me a lot about Waterford & the strange "[illegible]
" conditions there. Nan & Alice are certainly popular hostesses. Aug 27. Mon. Cloudy, threatening this morning, so we gave up the charming drive we had planned Alice & I took a walk, to invite some of the guests to the dance they are going to give Gurdon Saturday at the Grange Hall. It rained hard, later. Read & sat around and felt stupid - After dinner the sun came out a little while. Miss Lawrence & Miss Fanning were down for a call.
