bought a few little things at a "sale" for a new piano in the vestry - a lot of fudge & lemonade & calendars &c. The sale was in the barn - which looked very nice - Met a lot of people, among then Mr. Rumball, the young minister & his wife and baby. When we got home it rained quite hard - and all the evening & was much cooler - Sat on the piazza a while & then read inside. The boys went to Parker's to spend the Evening. Aug. 24 Fri. A fine morning - crisp & cool & blue & white. After breakfast Jno. & Gurdon & Alice & I decided to climb Mt. Tire'm, behind the house & Gurdon went & got Dorothy Parker, Marjorie, Eleanor & Miss Serres - but of course he "climbed away" from us, with the girls. Alice, Miss S
, John & I took a leisurely climb - It was cer- tainly beautiful. The village & lake and Mc- Quain's pond, and Rice's Hill and the "Plummer Road" &c. &c. The last part - in the pines - was a little blind - We had to find our way by piled up stones. There were juniper & white birch & pines and blueberries &c. &c. Way over the other side was a lovely view of Bear Mt., Bear pond, Long & Sebago lakes & the smoke hanging over Portland. We could see the Poland Spring House, with the glass, and the house on Mt. Pleasant. Then we went over East - above Lake Keoka, and told funny stories & rested (with sweaters on!) Went down by way of "Flag rock" - (also
