Kimball came over and sat on the "cooker" & talked
to us in the yard - He said talks very
"Eastern" & is rather interesting. Had to give up college & the
career of a surgeon - when his father died - to help his uncle on a farm.
At my suggestion he is to make a cooler for the church sale &
Alice is to buy it - all
satisfied I got some fudge at "Sade's" & we ate it.
It rained a little. After dinner went out & sat on the rocks up
back of the house & read.
Nan soon got too hot & nervous &
went back just before supper Miss and Mrs. Lawrence
called - (Brooklyn school teacher & her mother.) After supper we went
up to the "Vestry" for ice cream - a huge dish for 10¢ - (Nan's treat)
Gurdon took his gun & went for
porcupines but didn't get any. Walked back with Jno.
Davis & had quite a talk. Later Mr.
& Mrs. Brewer
& blind Miss
(Harriett?) Knight called. They were pleasant - especially
Miss Knight. The boys can't bear Mr.
Brewer & are always playing tricks on him.
Aug. 23. Thurs.
Hot morning - Loafed &
read - We had a call (under the trees) from Rev. Dr.(?)
Pattison of Balto
(very pleasant) and his
sister-in-law Mrs. Stevens, wife of Major Stevens
of the Ancient & Honorable Artillery (now retired) and
an author & expert on fly fishing &c. We talked
Canada &c. I found her very agreeable &
