views, finally
climbing a stupendous hill, where the driver (a boy) announced that he
thought he'd taken the wrong road! He verified it by a farmer and
while he turned around I tried to get some faint suggestion of the lovely
spot. We were fully 2 miles & a half up the road, I sh'd say, but
found the other, which finally joined the one we came down on and
kept on it till within a few miles of Saranac, where
we branched off thro' the pines again, past the new Tuberculosis
Sanitarium. Caught up with the four horse drag (the
Willards &c. from the hotel and found a warm
welcome when we arived at 7.
Mr
& Mrs. Hunt proved very nice "old
teaparties" as Con used to say!
spent the next hour arranging ourselves (my new waist - white
&c.) and paraded into the banquet at 8+. It was very, very
elaborate and quite beautiful, we sat opposite the
Elkins, Miss Parker of
Governeur
and a couple whose names I didn't know, and next to the
Allens of Adams & the
Seamans of Pulaski. About
the 3rd course I was tired out and food began to pall - too bad, too, it
was so good! The speeches were some of them good. Our Mr.
Lee responded to "The Ladies" gracefully. Mr.
Slawson presided beautifully. The Mc
Kinstrys
sat near us. I like them. I went upstairs
about 12, long before they were thro'. They sang songs &c. till nearly
two. I didn't sleep well till then.
