baloons (early) and gorgeous fireworks (later.) The night was ideal. Still and gray. I came home soon after the fireworks began & read &c. All our "boys were up the river". July 8 Sun. A still day. Claude 'phoned inviting me up to dinner and I had a nice visit with Char under the trees, afterwards. On the way home I wandered thro' Mt. Hope awhile. Saw the boulder at Prof. Ward's lot. He was killed by an Automobile in Buffalo Fourth of July - a wonderful man, too. Helen's grave had white flowers on it. Came home and read "Fenwick's Career", which is rather harrowing. July 9. Mon. Rain this a.m. Papa left for the Editor's convention at 1000 Is. Park & the Flacks have gone to Muskoka and Ojibway. Cleared off rather warm, later. Read "Conquest of Canaan". July 10. Tues. Lunched with Mother at Sibley's this noon. Then called on Mary - at the office. Mame Dickens went to the Natl with me a terrible "me-lo-dra-ma"! (A joke - the trip
