After we went to bed "Tom" saluted
us with corks & things over the top of the partitions - which do
not meet the ceiling. Our bed was very soft and we slept pretty
well, but were reluctant to start out for fish with "Tom" - as he invited us
July 27 Saturday
to - at 4:20 this morning. It was pleasant enough then - but pouring
rain when we got up - about eight - "Tom" (we never called him that but it's more
convenient than to write "Mr. Struthers, & seems
to suit him better) had great stories to tell at breakfast - of a giant
lunge hooked & almost landed - then lost!
It was really quite tragic. Mr. Dymond,
Sr. entertained us - & "Ernest"
sat by & occasionally assented & Mrs.
D.
talked her soft way. I am quite in love with her & I think her
relations are too. After breakfast we all went out on the piazza
Mr. D., Sr. wrote,
"Ernest" read my Harpers, "Tom"
cleaned his bicycle,
Mary sewed a button on her coat &c. I took 2
pictures of them, so occupied. Finally we got restless, & I
borrowed "Bella's"
Mackintosh, which her brother got
her in London last summer & (See page 146.)
