Salem boy insisted he had put a "herrin" in our carriage - but we did not find it! We saw the Custom House (Hawthorne's) & the old one, with the old eagle over the door. The houses where Hawthorne lived - The "7 gables" the Herbert St. tenement - The Wall St. house & the Grimshaw home where he was married (next the old burying ground) - also many more quaint places - some with "histories" and some without. One facing Washington Square was especially interesting to us, old shutters with crescent,- heart- & other shaped holes in them. Finally we came around to Essex Institute (there is a fine old house opposite, & another very near there!) & were just registering when who should appear but Wiltsie! come up to spend the rest of the day with us! We got the keys and went out to see the old "first meeting house" (moved here - & rebuilt with the old rafters &c.) a queer enough little
