a long time - till Mr. & Mrs. W. appeared in sight - Mr. & Mrs. K. were far ahead. We fled on some more miles & then took the longest rest of all ( Mary was tired) on a hilltop by a deserted house - found pears & apples & golden rod. I dusted Diana & we watched wheelmen (& women) going past. Took a picture looking across the fields (mostly grass & sky) & a freight train. Finally we started on & I felt so fresh I spun away ahead. At the next forks an old man told me it was "four mile and a half" to the city. I went about in circles while he conveyed the information. On I wheeled to Gates - while I waited at the town pump- conversing with a townsman - till the others came along. Then we started in together - but must needs stop on a small grove outside the limits to eat some Iceland moss candy Frank had bought. Here our 4 friends (not together) passed us for the last time (we had passed them 4 miles back) and Mr. King remarked "You're scorchers when you do ride!" to which we agreed. I think Frank had a nap here - & we three girls caressed & coaxed each other. We didn't want to get
