Aug 4. Sunday Was up late, writing, last night & found, to my surprise, that it was quarter of one when I appeared down stairs. Mama had gone to church & I postponed my breakfast till dinner. A delightful letter from Claude, dated Rome, made us happy. I wrote most of the p.m. & evening. We had one or 2 showers. Edith was here to tea (cream toast & chocolate) & to enjoy (?) one thunder shower on the steps. We walked down to Mary's after- ward, but she had gone to Silver Lake. I saw E. on the car & came home to write again. Aug. 5. Monday Pleasant. Interviewed Hovey
