and when we came to go there was moonlight outdoors. They suggested
a moonlight ride to the Lake
tomorrow night - and it was planned. Was invited to a "cold hen"
supper at Ned's & church afterward - but
did not accept. N. told me
domestic troubles - of hers & brides & grooms & the others!
devoted some time after supper to N.Y. papers.
Nov. 4. Mon.
A lovely Indian summer day - warm & sweet. I attended to
business till five. Then told Martha's fortunes! After tea I walked & talked - to
Plymouth Church and then Diana carried me - flying - to Ned's all primed for a spin. An hour in her studio-boudoir
and another up and down the pavements by "pale moonlight" &
still our Davises
did not come. We two rode the Length of Lake
Ave. pavement - beside otherwheres - and at nine I flew
home - without dismounting. The moon was just casting off the
filmy veil which she'd been wearing and came forth most gorgeously. I
lay prone on the couch an hour while Papa read aloud to Mother
and me - and then to bed!
