Sept. 7. Sat.
No half holiday today, alas. Stopped to see
Mary this noon - & Ned. Later we 3 all happened to meet on
Plymouth Ave
with our wheels & talked up a trip tomorrow but it threatens
rain. At five (or before) I rode Diana up
to Davis' & had a nice chat
with Mr. D. on the piazza before
Mrs. D.Helen & Dr.
Coombs came from the Lake. Charlotte has been
sick a week, but had to go to the office this p.m. because everyone
else was sick! I think
Helen's doctor's very charming - she's
young - presume between 25 & 30 - tho' she doesn't look more
than 25. And is a charming Boston girl - well dressed & modest
& pleasant & not a bit "professional." Started home about 6 - via
Pearl Street. Two lovely letters from Claude today and one from Gertrude & one from Mr.
Hodges - regretting not to have seen us at Pleasant
Pt.
Threatened rain all the evening - but didn't. A breeze & cooler.
Stopped my accounts (about 8:30) to ride Diana to a fire on
Spring St. (or alley). Nothing serious, but "pretty
engines." Am re-reading "Alice in Wonderland" which I find
very clever. "Defender" came in 7 min. ahead (first race) Theo. says.
1895.
