toasted our feet, while, Flavie, "Uncle" & Mr. Hughes called upon us. It was a long, cold, windy, rain & moonlight night. Ned & I shivered in each other's arms & giggled at the "soup" - (macaroni-stewed tomatoes, onions & beef extract) we were to have for breakfast & also talked of more serious things. The long night passed at last and chilly morning came. July 31. Wednesday Helen was up betimes & we put on all our clothes - it was like November. Ned got breakfast our soup & coffee - both delicious. We sat in the tent door a la Bohemian - with the soup pail between us, and ate & "enjoyed misery". It was warming too. Ned did the housework while I made my toilet and I'd just finished my lavations &c. when behold! The flag of St. George & sure - enough Tom beneath it. He is indeed a gallant swain. I welcomed him to our outdoor parlor & entertained him an hour. I fired his revolver and he presented me with the faithful flag of St. George as a token of fealty - I suppose. It rained & I wore his Glasgow Mackintosh while he told me how the girls were wrecked yesterday & I was invited to inscribe his white hat - which I did "Leeboards", Queen of Tapioca. July 31, 1895
