trolley - ride (like the morning one) back to Newtonville we arrived just in good time for dinner. After dinner we sat on the piazza talking & joking Edith - who was mowing the lawn (for which Wiltsie gave her a dollar!) & being eaten somewhat by enormous mosquitoes. Alice went to put Guerdon to bed & Wiltsie invited me to take a trolley ride up to Echo Bridge.

I consented & he asked Hattie
& Mama also. We took the car going away from the station and had a beautiful ride of a number of miles - past the site of the new house that is to be - the end of the new boulevard which is to take them to Boston and thro' "Newton Lower (or Upper?) Falls" &c. &c. It grew duskier & duskier but the road was always fine and white and whether country houses or woods & fields skirted it passed thro' Newton Highlands & Newton Upper Falls. It was dark (as electric-lighted places can be) when we reached the end of the line - just before we got there, there was a piercing shriek and a girl had
