ushered by a very polite sexton. We saw relics of the old days,
upstairs, & John Alden's
tomb stone set in the wall
&c.&c. Then came out & found a suburban car which
Helen
had directed us to and which took us out thro' the Back
Bay district,
Com. Av.
&c. &c and away out Beacon
St. across the Back Bay fens, thro'
lovely Brookline with beautiful house perched
about on the hills, terraced lawns, hedges - & all manner of
tasty landscaping. The good taste of those people in house building
quite impresses me. There are almost no atrocities such as one sees
everywhere else. The bricks - or one kind they use - are a most
beautiful warm brownish gray - with white trimming & dark green
shutters - a most harmonious affect. The street car tracks are in a
grassy middle-place - between two boulevards - and the ride is
delightful. We came within sight of the reservoir, which we visited!
