Aug 1. Thurs. The dear boy's 29th birthday - and he's spending it in Florence, I's pose - I crawled out at 5:30 to see a mag- nificent rainbow spanning all Peterboro - and the promise of a cool comfortable day. Mary followed & we were soon ready for our early breakfast. Too ready. We took a walk "up town" with Mr. & Mrs. Barnard before it. Break- fast over & bill paid (all this for one Canadian dollar!) we were "whirled away" again in the 'bus and boarded. the "flyer" for Port Hope. It took an hour to get there, but was still early morn- ing and an hour & 3/4s to boat time when we reached Port Hope. Mary& I decided to walk over, rather than trust our bones to a hack, which seemed to have replaced the carryall. We walked past brilliant flower gardens & a residence with grounds & finally got to a grocery & general store where we bought fruit. It was kept by a brother of Edith Carson's - a friend of Jack Ballagh's, & she was called down & visited with - a very pretty girl indeed, who rides a
