morning (witnessing a little girl's "Papa's" bicycle smashed by a horse on the bridge, on the way) Had to walk some of the way. Road torn up &c. Sat under the willows overlooking the valley & read & wrote for an hour & a half. Then came back in somewhat quicker time than I took going. Passed the 300 mile mark (by Mt. Hope) coming home. Geo Humphrey came up this p.m. to hear Claude's last letter - I spent all p.m. & evening reading on piazza &c. July 15. Monday J.G. does feel good to get home. Busy & don't mind it. Our picnic is Wed & J.G. says I can go. Rained hard last night To-night rode down to Mary's (bare-headed) for a chat. Found Geo. H. here - or coming away. He came back & staid awhile talking bicycle & Miss Marshall was here still longer. Read "A Dr. of the Old School" (Bonnie Briar Bush) to Mama afterward - until she sobbed & my voice did tremble. July 16. Tuesday Gloomy day & I was oppressed by the weather, for once - Worried about Canada boarding place for the girls &c. Supped with Edith, but came home early, for a restless evening.
