drive with the Colwells in a three-seated yellow buckboard with a "native" driver. The Island is ideal to drive on - we saw the old mission church built in 1830, which I'd been reading about in "Anne" - also the site of her house. The old mission buildings - now a hotel. And lovely drives thro' the woods - to "arch rock" - with a glimpse of the water far below - "Sugar loaf" - where I took their pictures. The rifle range - the back view of Fort Mackinac - "Skull cave" (where we made fun of the driver's story & made up a better one for him) the cemeteries and Fort Holmes - where we climbed the lookout and viewed the straits and the Island of Bois Blanc (called "Boblon" by the natives!) and the golf links. Early's farm, the shore drive, lover's leap, wishing spring &c. &c. &c. It is very beautiful - arbor - vitae trees - open woods & fine roads for driving or riding - we met young Cudahy of Omaha - notorious for having been kid- naped a few years ago & ransomed in gold by this father. The man told us great tales of the place - about driving up & down the straits in winter - to St. Ignace Mackinac (town) &c on ice 20 in. thick- lumberring &c. We saw the train ferry way off in the distance - passed the "Cannon Ball" a place where they catch the fish & then serve fish dinners - near
