at Mary's and had a little chat and just a
glance at her pictures - couldn't stay.
Davises all very sad because of
Lilian's
sickness, Frank's worries, Mrs. Griswold's death, and
Helen and Hamilton both rather
below par. At Claude's found Father and
Mother, Claude in his evening clothes. Char
in her pretty light green silk and beads.
Carlie and Peruzzi before the fire. Christmas
wreathes in the windows and Christmas
candles on the table - and such a good dinner.
Chicken and sausage - coffee, spinach, apple pie, &c. Then we had the Pie on the
library table and it was simply full - poems on every thing and of course too
many presents. Claude was delighted with his
books & things and Char with her paper
and the Atlantic (which Mother
gave her.)
Mother overpowered me as usual and all the
cats got little stockings of catnip and
Carlie one of Educators! of which he is very
fond. We all had a very good time and when we got home (about ten) Mother and I couldn't resist opening our packages
from the girls and by mail. Charlotte gave
me
Thackery's letters (the last ones) &c. &c. It was just an ideal
Christmas eve. We had great fun with Vanderbilt
at the office today presenting him with a $20 gold piece (or something that
looked like it) and the boys fixed up an express box.
