Hoar, Lodge, Tellman (the pugilist) &c. &c. We sat there for sometimes after a Mississippi man had spoken & was speaking on the subject of Oleomargarine (a week's session on this!) and then went over to the House, just as Mr. Moss was being sworn in & they began discussing "retired pay" matters (army) &c. It is sur- prising to me the hubbub which pre- vails in both houses. While Mother took a walk (she got sick of it) I went back to the Senate and Oleomargarine was still the subject of discussion. There were a few more or less interested listeners some tireless stenographers taking it down but a good many were going out, walking about, or reading or writing. Mark Hanna

was busy at telegrams. Mother had got lost while I was gone - but was found again, and we got washed & rested and drank some ice water and sauntered down to the station to the 4:10 train - a full one - watching the Monument and the dome disappear in the bright afternoon sun. It's a three-hours ride to Philadelphia, but rather interesting as there's Baltimore to
