(very big ones!) We didn't have time to go back
to the hotel before noon - so stopped to see a drill, outside - and
where we got out of the car went into the Botanical Gardens
for a few minutes and saw the bananas grow &c. We got to the
Supreme Court room 8 minutes of 12 but found it had
adjourned for the season, so went up into the Ladies
Gallery at the House, and watched the raising of
the Mall and the formal opening for the day. We staid until a
"gentleman from Kentucky" began a long winded
speech, and then went back to the hotel, packed up the few things
we'd left out in the morning - and took a parting view up 12th
St. from #722, paid our bill & left for the station. As I
sat on the sofa in the ladies hall waiting for Mother
to put on her gloves I looked up and saw Mrs. Gilbert
directly opposite me, her room-key in her hand - visiting with a
nice looking youngish actress looking woman. It seemed like old
Nantucket day - and I almost tho't she
recognized me! We went to the station and left our satchels, then had a
lunch near the station, and then went back to the
Capitol - to the Senate - where we saw Senator
