over to Pa. Ave. and 13 1/2 Street - to the Mt. Vernon Ry. Station and took the eleven o'clock electric train (a little late) to Mt. Vernon. A very interesting family - a graceful young wife, husband, two boys and a girl - all in deepest mourning, sat near us. We crossed the famous old "long bridge" into Virginia and passed thro' a historic country- Braddock's heights, where his army encamped and Alexandria of civil war fame and where Papa used to be in 1862, editing the Alexandria News. Before we reached the Mt. Vernon entrance we rode four miles up thro the old "estate" a hilly forest - country - like some of the hunting country "up our valley". We arrived at the gates about noon - and noticed the old day road coming up - all edged with cedars - and "rolly" enough. Inside the gates it was very beautiful - ideal - great old trees - and everything so quite and calm and sweet and tranquil. The old garden with the box hedges is a "dream" and smells so sweet! We went into the greenhouse and saw bits of ivy and the Martha Washington rose for sale. There is a sundial out in
