(1/2/04 "Light that Failed")

1/5/04 "Medal & the Maid"

Rode down in the car with Mrs. Crichton. Read in my room, later. All went "bye-bye", early. Jan. 2. Sat. Very stormy day. "Zaza" Blackall didn't come in p.m. & I was very busy. Feared the cars wouldn't be running, but got home all right, and then Claude who had been the p.m. with Jno. Hilliard, insisted I wd go tonight to see Forbes Robertson & Gertrude Elliot in the Light that Failed. Went over to Behn's to telephone for seats & Frieda wanted to go too. Chattie & I intended to go yesterday, but the terrible disaster in the Iroquois, Chicago (588 dead and over 100 injured) scared me so I didn't. F. & I went in a howling blizzard - but it was worth it. Simply fine - from the camp scene in the desert & "Mandalay", to the last minute. Jan 3. Tue. Loafed by the register most of the day (It was plenty cold) Read the Light that Failed again & held Zozie, Zenda. Mary came in the p.m. & we sat upstairs by my fire and then went over to Lura's to supper (coffee 3 times today!) Laura Hutchinson came in later. Talked about "flinch" and "poor Yurrup". Went home in another blizzard. Harvey Ellis died tonight - in Syracuse. Jan 4 Mon. Very cold - and very busy. J.G. began being mayor in ernest and got down
