church up on Lafayette square - the famous
old St Johns ("where Ms. Blaine and
Mr. Logan were buried "from") and lots of people were
"married from" &c.&c. The first building built on the square -
over a hundred years ago. We first went in the vestibule near the
choir - but there were no ushers there - so went to the other -
where a crowd was waiting & there was a little sign stating that
pewholders would be admitted at eleven and the public - in the remaining
places - at 11:15. We went up in the gallery & waited with the
little crowd at one door - but it looked so full I went to another
door and an usher showed us immediately to two front seats (I think
the only two!) in the gallery right in the middle of the house,
where I picked out immediately (just below us) Mrs. Roosevelt
with
TrentonKermit, Archibald and the little girl (all sweet
looking children) and in
further up in front Chauncey Depew
and his bride - and over across
Admiral Schley - besides many other very distinguished people
I did not know. A lady
