beautiful! The red sun sank in a rosy mist behind the purple
Monument and in the foreground the lovely dome of the
Capitol glowed rosy red. As it grew darker the
lights twinkled out all over the city and pretty soon it was all
bathed in soft moonlight - A "never-to-be-forgotten" sight as our
German friend would say. After standing on the balcony a little
while after dinner we went down stairs and thro' the whole library
with the Rand- McNally guide
(which is splendid) and were quite filled with its glories. It is
very very
beautiful. We even saw the Senate reading room (not
usually open) and that is "a dream" of richness. We liked
Alexander's pictures especially (but all - almost - were
fine (but Will Low's?) The reading room rotunda
is the richest thing I ever saw - a perfect mass of ornament &
gold and jewels - even a golden-faced clock with jeweled hands. In
the "Exhibition hall" are many extreme- ly interesting old maps - prints -
illuminated
