not coming to the party last night, saying politely that he forgot it (which was another whopper - it was because he hates rabbits, and had to be by when the "Jones" came in!) He was terribly nice and confidential with me, over the potatoes, and we had a heart-to-heart talk on the gunwhale of the fish tug, before the others came - and Helen had to call us away from the charm of the net-hauling machine up forward, where we were when they were ready to go.  to talk to ladies, I suppose) We were gracefully lowered (after the groceries and ice) into the "Bouncing Bet" (named today, for Napoleon's hired girl) and politely pushed off by "Smiling McIntosh" - who was promised faithfully to bring the steel boat down if it arrived before ten o'clock. What was our consternation and astonishment to see the "Manitou" arriving before we'd left Will Oldfield's island behind! But we didn't go back - nor see whether or not the steel boat ("little Corporal") got off. Had a dandy sail home - but a long one - Almost two hours. Got home about 9:45 and had a second supper.
