May 7. Thurs. The week has been mostly house clearing and staying-down-at-noon-&c. J.G. & J.W. are in N.Y. I went early today and lunched with "Edith & Edith" at Lotspike's and we had a long "heart-to- heart" talk about "Jane" & "Helen D." Oh! The fickleness of woman! E.S. was once jealous of Helen and now berates her. E.J. was once (very recently) Mary
's slave and now haughtily ignore her existence. They are setting each other on the pinnacle - How long will it last? Sometimes I am thankful I am no one's beloved and no one's mine - except in fancy which can change when it likes. Mabel invites me to "Robin Hood" Saturday p.m. May 9 Sat. But I didn't go, because we were so fearfully busy at the office. Chat had a half holiday and came up to Lura's and I had "some visit" with her. Sunday May 10 Sun. a.m. was beautiful and I didn't go out anywhere, but after lunch - or dinner, rather, rode over to see if Chat wanted to go up on the Pinnacle. It had got rather hot, however, & Lura was there, so we 3 took a car down to Charlotte & back - staid
