Market and all its environs - which were many - fish &
fruit and every thing under the sun - but the best of all were the
funny old colored Mammies all done up as tho' it was freezing cold -
selling "herbs" and chickens (some live ones) and often with a
little wood fire in a tin pail, to keep them warm. I tried to take a
picture, but it was too dark. Everyone goes to the market (which is
sumptuous inside) with big market baskets - nice looking women &
men, boys, negroes, servants, butlers, everyone imaginable - It seems
to be a sort of a Social function Saturday morning - the flowers
were lovely there too. Next we walked up to the beautiful old
capitol - strolling around it to the East front and going
in the main corridor. It being Saturday morning &
Congress not in session (It opens at noon every day but
Saturday & Sunday) we went every where. The lobby or rotunda -
