and Edith Andrews had brought over a box of Fudge and the porter was all right and three pretty young girls - going to Washington, too, rather amused us. Sat. Mar. 22 We slept very comfortably in "Lower Ten" and were up before we reached Baltimore and watched ourselves being taken into Washington. The capitol dome appearing to prove we were right. We arrived at the Pennsylvania Station, where Garfield was shot at 8:30 a.m. and sailed up Pennsylvania Avenue to the Raleigh in an Automobile omnibus. It was a lovely morning. We got a nice room on the Seventh floor (#722) with brass bed and all appliances. After a delicious breakfast in the sumptuous dining room - all palms and richness "Little Lord Fauntleroy" table boys and English waiters - We strolled up the Avenue, turning down toward the Market and passing first into the big new Post Office bldg. just opposite the Raleigh. Saw our mail box &c. We passed a funny horse auction on one of the side streets - with a lot of queer looking Southerners - whites and negroes running second and third grade horses
