get up State St before the 6 o'clock crowd commenced & dressed for Sara & called for Ned. We met Charlotte at the Lyceum (Dake's) & found the seats not so awfully bad. Bernhart & her company were good. It was all so French The play is horrible - & the characters - I was glad to see her, but must confess I was not particularly impressed. Scarpia (the villain) was very good. The scenery was mostly special but would stand considerable im- provement. Sara is "wonderfully preserved," certainly. Has a pretty profile, but rather an ugly mouth & horrid eyes - all painted around. Her hair is "tawny" surely & looks just like a wig. After it was out we saw Charlotte on her car & I went home to sleep with Ned. Of course we talked a good while - Miss Hall ("Lena Belle") has fallen a victim to Ned's charms & I act as father confessor. (The adoration is not reciprocated.) After midnight there was a heavy thunderstorm & then we went to sleep. May 15th Friday
Mrs. Millard died. 4 p.m.
A gorgeous morning. Got up early, left Ned in bed & walked home to breakfast - Bought straw- berries on the way & ate them later. Changed my dress & rode to the office. Rode up with Geo. Humphrey at noon & tonight met Ned on Fitzhugh St. After supper went to Mary's to return "La Tosca" & they wanted to go for a ride, so Mary, Alice & I rode over to Davis' via Court St. Bridge & East Avenue. It was delightful
