him dying while I went with them - and
Matie & Lura - to Scottsville by the path.
Oh, it is a lovely ride! The five miles to the
"fork" are along the Genesee, (the way we go to
Ballantine's bridge) and windy and lovely. Then
around a curve, under an arch - up a hill and we come to the tow
path of the old canal, which the path follows for 6 miles or so. The canal
has water in it, like a creek. There are trees and bushes arching
over the path - low fields and woods and chestnut trees &c. the
other side - bicyclists gathering chestnuts and mushrooms - color - air -
"ozone" -
Charlotte cheered me from behind and
Lura set the pace - a fast one - we
flew past "Milk" signs & "cider" - lovely little bridges - locks -
roads, but few houses. Stopped at "Whites" (an old
lock?) to photograph our group, but
Charlotte & Lura refused, so I took
the others twice. Then on again - around the foot of big hill - and
finally left the canal and took to the road - & up a long
mile-hill and we were in Scottsville. I rode to the
top & then waited for
Charlotte, who walked & she &
Matie & I sat & rested at
the top, overlooking a lovely sweep of valley in two directions, while
we were there John & Mae & Bert & Ollie Stull
