chestnutts are plenty this year too, we saw people gathering plenty of them. After dinner & dressing & the last chapter of "Barbara Dering", I went downt to Ned's - where I found Frank Davis - and he walked up as far as Clifton St. with us on our way to John & Mae's - We found John taking a revolver to pieces and Mae washing her hair. And quite madonna-like with her hair about her face and the green-y wrapper on. We were entertained in the usual way - and made to stay for eating. John proposed a raffle for the only piece of pumpkin pie - but Ned got it and ate it. Jen Clements came before pancakes were ready and of course John talked "Henry

" to her. She is to be married the 21st. Mae cooked cakes awhile and then John - delicious ones - with honey & some of Mae's prime coffee &c. It was cozy & Bohemian as usual. We 3 girls walked down the Avenue together. Left Miss C near Willowbank & Ned & I walked way home. It was a lovely night. Oct. 5. Monday J.W. has gone to N.Y. again (to his beloved) and I'm busy. Stopped at the
