She has begun taking breakfast & suppers with the Thomases - now Rose is there to do ditto (Rose rooms there - opposite Helen - & has a $50.00 a month position editing the deaf mute paper.) Sept. 28. Monday. Pleasant. Shopped considerably - a new scotch-plaid waist, among other things - walked to day because my only riding skirt is being "fixed." Ned gave me a long talk about Rose's hard-up-ish-ness. Wants me to lend her money to lend Rose. I didn't refuse - but oh, my! I'd rather do it another way, I must say. Mary send me some "poetry" today. I rode up with her - no, walked - this noon. Tonight Ned & I went to see Gillette in his play "Secret Service". It was fine. Amy Busby by received flowers & an ovation. Odette Tyler was very cute and all were good. I liked Gillette immensely. He was so cool & funny & when in the deadliest peril always smoked a cigar! The boy - part was good, too - and the atmosphere of gunpowder & war. The sound of the artillery passing was wonderful, I thought. Amber Smith & another man sat in a box and spooned very openly - Claude saw me home.
