old grasshopper wheel. I rode a mile or so and found it needed no more effort than my 64 geared one - but I don't like the motion. He'd have had me ride home on it I think (Rose was riding mine) - but I left them soon - for they were stealing my little visit with Dame Nature - and a lovely sunset. Spent the evening reading & fussing. Sept. 17 Thursday Got a letter from Gilmore today. He's having a nice time "up at Buleigh," but Mrs. G. is catching the fish - 6 to 16 pound lunges. "Griggs" evidently enjoys "Jack Holmes". Helen's "function" came off tonight. I stopped at Mac Arthur's on the way down, to leave some prints &c. Ida has taken some good ones with her Falcon "Clarke's" among them (!) Emma walked down with me (Mary didn't go!) Rose Mills was there & the rest soon came - Emma, Charlotte, Edith & I had them lively games of Pedro, while Ned, Rose, Freddie, & Helen played Poker, Old Maid & such tame games and petted Patsey, the cat. Then Freddie sang & Rose played the violin guitar, while Edith made coffee. We had delicious lettuce sand- wiches, too, and olives and cake & grapes. Rose looked awfully pretty, in a rainbow-y tinted silk waist, with black thread lace (narrow.) Sept. 18 Friday Another lovely day. J.G. ought to have been playing golf - but came down to a
