with the wind at one's back! We all dismounted & "discussed"
when we came to the sign "To the Newport House" and then
went on & missed Norton St. after all. We
rested half an hour under a big tree at the foot of a hill & then went
on uncertainly - till "The Forest House" (no forest in
sight) appeared & the waters of the bay first over the hill! Also the
bay rail- road - and as just then a train came along & the wind
was strong going in we took the train - wheels & all - & had
a nice ride in to North St. Station - only a little
after 12 - but all rode home (3 miles or so) I rather enjoying the city
ride thro' unfamiliar Streets. Found I had ridden only about 12 1/2
miles in all. Did my cash accounts & I had a nice bath before I
dressed for dinner - which I did justice to - ice cream & all.
Edith came soon afterward &
later, Ned & Frederika & Mary - & all staid till nearly 6, when Trudy & I walked to Adams
St. with them. I sent Miss Bradley's
prints.
Aug. 31. Monday
Busy - & beautiful - day. A joy to ride this weather. Trudy slept with me last night. This
evening she read aloud & Mama & I
sewed.
Sept. 1. Tuesday
We all went to the "Black Hussar" (one of
Clark's favorite parts!) tonight - 20 seats. 10 in G. and
10 in H. I sat between Gertrude
& Mary with Emma & Ned next and the Davises
in front.
