Sat. Aug. 8th
Such a hot week as this has been! I have perspired several coats of
my tan off and just managed to exist with the help of
Diana to carry me to & fro. "The
Wilburs" own the town and I see them unload from
the Congress Hall bus nearly every noon, and I think some
board opposite us (office) on
East Ave., as I see theatrical looking people out
there and one of the men kissed "the fattest woman" on the piazza - in
broad day- light - yesterday. They were "carrying on."
Ida MacArthur invited me to go with her
Thursday (6th)
so I did. It was "Dorothy" and quite good (not "rank" anyway)
I tried my best to get up an enthusiasm for "Clark" but
didn't succeed very well. Saw
"living pictures" for the first time - this style.
"Farewell" (girl & soldier-boy embracing) Then the
Battle (guns & soldiers in a wheat field- military
glare in the eye &c.) "Comrades" (with the music - one
splashed with gore - still in wheat field - & the other holding him up
with a "pained" expression) Then a sister of charity appears (in the
next) and one "comrade" dies to changing lights & music &
Rock of Ages. Then "Return" and the other
Comrade & the young lady are about to rush in to each others arms
so! Very thrilling indeed. Everyone said "Lovely"!
Friday (7th) I
went down to Edith's in the
1896.
