the latter reached the piazza, he remarked that "me hated rival" had
swallowed bait, hook, sinker, line and all! We waxed hilarious still
more and after
Miss Dennis & Miss Field had been
escorted "over to Jacob's" (where they room) we opened up
apollinaris (Cholly & I) and flooded
out the drawing room - treated Wiltsie (who was writing a letter) and Miss I. informed
Alice, as she was going upstairs, that
we now intended to take Wiltsie
out and show him what we could furnish for an evening's
entertainment. However, we did retire.
July 29. Wednesday
We heard people coming home from York at all
hours of the night, and about 4 this morning a very sharp and drenching
shower. The morning was beautiful and cool and bright, tho' and at
breakfast Wiltsie invited us to
drive to York Harbor - and of course we immedi-
ately accepted. The buck board (2 seats) and gray mare came around early
and we started off in good spirits - and a fog - which gradually
cleared away. We went the "back" or Ports- mouth road - very
pretty. Passed a large uncompleted house (which we passed going to
Mt.A.) which W. said was being built by a man who was
engaged to a young woman who died - As soon as she died work was
stopped on the almost-completed house and not a nail had been driven since
- I photographed it
