since last spring. One mere boy was doing very
well on a lovely Henner
lady - and one
giddy girl copied some cupids to actual distraction - such looking babes! We were all simply wrecks when we left, dragged ourselves to the car, and as for
me, I shed everything tight and put up my feet on a chair and read
Caspar Whitney's Experiences in the cold
cold north. We dined with Gordon at 6:30 - and he told us about
Will Orchard's debts & extravagances
& delights &c. Will is
down at Mitchell's on Washington
Square. Madden had
gone out to dinner tonight - both were out till 1:30 the night before and
walked untold miles seeing everything
architectural to be seen. We walked down to
Garrick's with Gordon & bade him good- bye & then climbed to our
seats at the Fifth Avenue. They were way over to one side, but near the
stage, for which I was glad. I can't try & describe that delighful
woman - Duse - but she is certainly a genius and her
company all partake of her inspiration and are all good -
Duval especially - and the maid. She, I mean
Duse - made Camille a delightful and
attractive - way up above those women other people portray - and I think
much finer than Dumas was capable of imagining. The
whole play was as natural & simple as life itself and no one seemed to
know there was an audience anywhere about, until that audience insisted -
at the end of each act - on repeated recognition. Many were
Italians-& as the play & the actors were also - they enjoyed it
tremendously. From beginning to end I couldn't keep my glass off of her
