with Miss Field & her friend & I dressed and
fin- ished Mama's letter before
supper. Everyone was dressed up for supper, and as usual,
Alice, Miss B.
& I were about the first at table & the last away - fresh lobster
was on the bill of fare. Mr. & Mrs. & Miss
Day came over to call, after supper & while Alice
put Gurdon to bed Miss
Bradley & I went up to the Lookout for Mrs. Reading & then down on the
rocks to watch the tide turn and the breakers beat - Oh! it was so fine.
The brilliant blue of the sea had turned a lovely gray & the sky
was rosy & fantastic with clouds we sat there till there was
only moonlight left - listening & talking - Mrs. R. told me much about
Nova Scotia - advises me to take the Plant(?) line
of steamers from Boston, if I go. And stay at the
Misses Wilson's on Cliff St.,
Yarmouth
(on her recommendation, if we go! We walked up to the hotel and
there sat on the porch looking down the beach - a most mag- nificent
view - the lights of Ogunquit - then
Wells Beach a glitter - some space beyond -
Then Kennebunk- Kennebunk
Point. Then "Woods Island light" on
Point Porpoise(?) In the other direction we
could see Boone Island light - off
York. I was reluctant to turn my eyes away.
