Wrote letters &c this morning. Spent the a.m. in Cro'nest backyard with Letitia & the babies, trying a Hawkeye A1 (with doubt- ful success) The boys were lovely. Claude out to dinner. Got back at 5 to find Laura Hutchinson just arrived (she had telephoned me) and she stayed to supper & till 10 p.m. Told me all about her trip to Europe this summer - which she made the most of and later about her troubles with Lura & Lura's with Blanche Sackett. I can see her side but of course I had seen Lura's before. I think she's over-sensitive. I think Laura
is penitent & I think Blanche is a silly little fool - but did give Lura good times - tho' they are neither of them worth such friendship as hers. Oct. 19. Mon. Fine day - Cold & still. Miss Garfield came to visit from N.Y. Talked in evening - about J.R.S. matters &c. She brought me Gardenhire's
last book. Oct. 20 Tues. Fine day. Went in top gallery with Laura & her sister to see Annie Russell in "The Stronger Sex" a clever play, where a young woman gets the best of a man who marries her for her money & makes him love her. Very harsh in places but Ok in the end. of course the clothes & things were lovely. Oct 21 Wed. Fine weather. Edith came up for me at 8:30. She is to move away from Ida's to Mrs. Bottle's boarding house (198 Lake Ave. the old) Farrar place opposite Dr. Lee's hos-
