the nicest apple (Baldwin?) I ever ate. We cut across country (went a glimpse of a powder house & "pond" & Ethel & finally came along the Edge of "Bull Head Pond" - above it where we stopped and ate lunch and loafed and took pictures for over an hour. The foliage there was the most brilliant of any we'd seen. It isn't particularly fine this year somehow. About two we skirted down and found a semblance of a path which led to the water edge thro' most beauteous woods - black and "brakey" with brilliant yellow leaves lighting up here & there and glimpses of the dark pond and the most wonderful lichen-covered stump I ever saw - finally the path lost itself and my [illegible]

of location worked over time and with wonderful success. I think I have an abnormal direction-instinct. I found another hilly opening which finally climbed to the semblance of a path. Skirted an open place, dove up thro' the woods (If I could only have taken it there!) And finally up & out into a meadow which we crossed and prowled along another wood edge till we came to the semblance of an opening & dove in for a half hours route walk thro'
