followed by a tremendous fire - a most
awful disaster. Almost everyone seems to have friends there and are
anxious. This afternoon I went over to the Lyceum to see Nance Neill
play Hedda
Gabler - a most awful play I don't care for her either, but was
glad to see it - once. In the evening read "Pam" again -
only doesn't really end!
Thu. Apr. 19
Still more awful reports from
San Francisco. The City being burned up.
Mrs. Cutler very anxious about her brother.
Mother went to a missionary
meeting this afternoon and I lunched at the Mechanics with Papa. Saw Ediththere.
Went to bed rather early.
Fri. Apr. 20
At last Mrs. C.
got a delayed telegram
saying her brother and his wife were safe but lost everything - & were
going to the country. The fire is still raging. It is awful. Lunched
at Sibley's with G.C.B. Shopped a little. Tonight
Father & Mother went to a sociable. I read awhile. Then bath &
bed early. Still feel mean.
Sat. Apr. 21
We've had a very spring - like
week - a little rain this afternoon. Very busy, so I couldn't go to
Grace Bingham's mother's
funeral. Came home early feeling very "rocky" indeed. Yesterday I
stopped in at "Y" to see Helen
who has consulted Dr. Angel and
feels encouraged She has a year's leave of absence from May. 15. Fine news from Hamilton and the progress of his
hotel scheme. Wrote &
"figgered" tonight.
