afternoon sun. We were sitting up on the hurricane deck when we
passed
Throg's Neck & Fort Schuyler
(as a very polite sailor-lad told us) and the sweet breeze &
setting sun were most lovely. The demand for dinner was so large
that there was a crowd so we waited till quite late and then had a very
nice dinner indeed with an[illegible]
waiter who was most attentive. A couple opposite did not please me
& going down we waited beside a little actress with a ring on
her thumb and a diamond every now & then & a tall bored
looking actor-man with her. After dinner we sat on deck & listened
to the music awhile & then went up stairs - way in the stern end
- behind something (nautical) and sat watching the foaming wake in
the young moon light. It was most beautiful. I enjoyed it intensely.
We passed a steam yacht & left her far behind. Then passed a
beacon shooting intermittent rays across the dark water. I tho't the
sunset and clouds gathering in the flame of it was
afternoon sun. We were sitting up on the hurricane deck when we
