We had a very delightful lunch and a most obsequious waiter, who thanked me for the tip (much to Mama's relief.) Then came a pleasant walk down The Avenue. We gazed at the new Vanderbilt house and the others, picked out numbers, where celebreties lived or had lived, strolled into the Cathedral - cool and shadowy and fragrant with moist air - flowers from the altars and a faint suggestion of incense - we did not kneel before the little shrines, but many did - rough & poor and faithful. On we went down The Avenue - alive with the day's parade - and it was a sight worth remembering - beautifully groomed men & women these New Yorkers certainly are - tho' I am convinced few are really beautiful. The men have really more fine looks than the women but do not dress any better (I mean those of the 400 - class - some N.Y. women dress atrociously, in my opinion).
