I read by the window till daylight went and then watched the river awhile and Mama came and sat with me. Spent the evening reading writing. Apr. 8 Monday A cloudy day, J.W. started for N.Y. To-night Mary & I saw Southern play "The Way to Win a Woman". It was fine: he is charming. They brought all the scenery & properties (even a skull & medicine bottles!) and it added wonderfully. Only the first act was a bit funny - bachelor busi- ness - and a serious scene with "Harry" & the girl he loved toasting muffins before a real fire. She refuses him because he hasn't any money, and in the beginning & midst of this sorrow guests arrive and his gesture as he goes to shut
