a Harlem train and had a long ride 'way up to
125th St. I saw ever so many apartment houses
we have chutes
in & know
about - The Empire is quite imposing. It was
quite an interesting ride to see, as I'd never been up there before. It is
very high & new just began reaching
Harlem & you can see the Convent &
other buildings and "green grocers" gardens &c - Glimpses of the
park between streets all the way up. We walked over toward the North
River, where we spied
St. Nicholas Ave. & remembered we found
Mrs. Hotchkin lived on it at No. 171. Mama
was delighted with the prospect of seeing her, so we went down &
called on her, in a flat. She looked very nice & was much
pleased to see us, invited us to lunch, told us how she taught cooking
lessons in the Deaf Mute Inst. & about
Walter
& how
"lovely" he is and so on. Gave
Mama her picture and invited me to visit
her. At last we came out & got a little horse car going up
St. N. Ave. to Ft. Lee ferry
& then walked up a hill & some steps and at last beheld
Riverside Drive
and some "lady"-bicyclists - & others.
