supper we went to Frederica's & coaxed her to go to a ten cent circus with us - picking up Alice Wysard when we got there. The circus was in an open place down in a corner of the 9th Ward. The moon was glorious - the lights flared - circus way and we saw that we were to be chaperoned by neighbors & small boys. A dapper man inside, got us to buy 5¢ reserved seats and up we perched on the canvas covered boards. We had everything in the old way - peanuts & all. The dapper man turned out to be the slack wire walker and later "assisted" the juggler (who had "assisted" him in the wire performance). The ticket-taker was the contortionist - and later made speeches "No! ladies & gents. We don't deceive you in no way, shape, manner 'er form. This ain't no circus concert but a refined and elevatin' "&c He also sold "concert" tickets - "fer, you might say, only a child's admission - 5 cents! "Goldie Mayo" performed on flying rings. Her old father was the clown. The cymbal player in the band took part and a beautiful horse - like burnished bronze
