Barnards. We found out about a woman travelling
with 6 children. We visited again. We walked the pier. We were pur-
suaded to sip whiskey to prevent colds &c. &c. all long
before the boat "hove in". At last it came - as I was snapping at
a
Canadian "hack" & we got on board & snapped at
everything -
officers & men & people & each other - to kill time. At
last we started - 2 hours late - at 11:45 - and our nice purser told us
dinner would be served at 12:30. It was very rough and people began
being sick immediately - Mr.
& Mrs.

advice, & so avoided utter wretchedness. We 4
& 3 others (men) were the only ones besides the officers at
