Mrs. L had put on a gay hat & stowed away her husband for the occasion & we went a cozy hour while the rain poured outside & we looked at White Lake - beautiful, but unattained. Clouds blew over & we were all let out among the moist flowers and picked our way among the "rain lakes" in the rocks towards the boats. Then another storm threatened & sails & rubber blankets were hung on tress to protect - but we did not need them. I sat on a damp log & read Harper's and helped Ned steal Prof. Forbes black tea. Also talked to "our crowd" & finally we started on - the men of the party not having taken the precaution to turn over their boats, had work to do getting out the water. The bay was most beautiful, and as our two boats kept down it together Mary trolled & succeeded in hooking a fine 2 pound bass - which Helen landed amid congratulations from following boats. But the birds flew low & the Clouds scurried on & the big drops fell & Helen & I rowed hard & made "Black Rock Island" just as the rain began.
